Postgraduate Diploma in Technical Theatre

The Postgraduate Diploma in Technical Theatre is an individually designed course of study, which builds on existing skills and knowledge in a chosen specialist area.  Students will choose one major subject, from Construction, Design, Lighting, Sound and Stage Management, although elements of all disciplines may form part of their study to ensure they become a rounded and employable theatre technician.

Students will be assessed, in an interview, by the Head of Department of their chosen specialist subject to define their individual requirements, current skill level and previous experience in order to create an appropriate course of study.

This could include practical and theory classes, shadowing professional staff, relevant work placements, and undertaking show roles on Mountview’s public performance programme.  There may also be the opportunity to undertake an academic research project, either individually or in conjunction with other Postgraduate students.

The Postgraduate Diploma takes place over three semesters, usually beginning in early September (although applicants with considerable experience may be offered a January start).  The course dates will vary depending on the show roles and placements assigned, but will comprise at least 33 weeks.

To qualify for the Postgraduate Diploma students must already have a degree, or considerable industry experience. Although the degree can be in any subject, we highly recommend that students also have some experience in their chosen subject.  If prospective students are new to technical theatre, it may be advisable to apply for the BA (Hons) Technical Theatre as this assumes no previous knowledge and will give a thorough grounding in all five subject areas over a two year period.
