Life at Mountview
Life at Mountview is a vibrant, inspiring and stimulating. Students come to Mountview because they are passionate about performing or working in the theatre. This energy is infectious.
Students come from all over the world and all walks of life and this breadth of experience is a vital part of the learning experience and social scene.
Situated in Wood Green in north London, Mountview is surrounded by many bars, restaurants and cafes and is well-placed for easy access to West End theatres and fringe venues, London’s cultural scene and nightlife. The world outside the rehearsal room undoubtedly plays as important a part in shaping students as the work within.
Students regularly get involved in Mountview’s community education programme and take part in extra-curricular performances including Christmas concerts and other special events as well as their own performance projects.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT & INDUSTRY LIAISON
Mountview’s industry liaison office works with students to prepare them for life in the industry, offering guidance on CVs, securing an agent, photographs, audition technique and many other aspects of the profession.
All performance courses culminate in a professional showcase attended by agents, casting directors and other prominent members of the industry.
Students who successfully complete their course attend a graduation ceremony in the presence of family, friends, the principal and a guest of honour. Previous guests of honour have included John Caird, Jim Carter, Brian Daniels, Ayub Khan Din, Adrian Dunbar, David Harewood, Douglas Henshall, Helen Hobson, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Amanda Holden, Mike Leigh, Sir John Mills, Nick Moran, John Nettles, Sharon Small, David Soul, Imelda Staunton, Barbara Windsor and Elaine Paige.
BRITISH ACTORS EQUITY ASSOCIATION
Courses accredited by Drama UK are an assurance to both the student and his/her future employer that the training is of an appropriate professional standard. This also means that British and EU graduating students automatically qualify for membership of the main performing arts trade union, Equity. Mountview students are eligible to join Equity as Student Members for a fee of £15.50 per year, which includes registering their professional stage name (if available). Please note that Equity Student Membership does not automatically lead to full membership of the union.
Students are invited to attend master classes with senior figures from theatre, television and film. Master classes have been given by Gillian Anderson, Jim Broadbent, Brian Cox, Jack Dee, Richard E Grant, Mike Leigh, Elaine Paige, Douglas Henshall, Phillip Quast, Rufus Sewell, Antony Sher, Kevin Spacey and Patrick Stewart.
Established in 2000, MV Management is a co-operative agency run by and for Mountview performance graduates.
Membership of the Student Union is open to all Mountview’s students. Affiliated to the NUS, the Union provides access to a wide range of services and discounts. The student body also elects its own committee which has regular meetings with the senior management team to discuss any suggestions or complaints students may have.
Students’ welfare and happiness are of prime importance and great emphasis is placed on pastoral care and physical health. During induction students attend seminars on a range of health issues including nutrition and personal health, and all are introduced to the student counselling service.
One of the great advantages of training in a college of our size is the supportive environment that the community here offers. However there are times when students need to seek specialist support and Mountview offers a free and confidential counselling service to all students from an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
There is a wide choice of flats, bedsits and shared houses in and around Wood Green which are substantially less expensive than in central London. We provide an up-to-date accommodation list to all new students to help them find suitable permanent accommodation.
PERSONAL TUITION SCHEME
Most students find that at some point they need assistance, guidance or reassurance. To meet this need, Mountview operates a proactive Personal Tutoring scheme giving all students the opportunity to meet regularly with an assigned member of academic staff, their 'Personal Tutor', in order to discuss and improve their personal, academic and career development.
