Autumn Intake

The course is an education and a training for the professional actor. It exists to equip students to work in the contemporary theatre and its associated industries. It aims to provide students with a structured sequence of learning opportunities through which they can develop their natural abilities by acquiring necessary physical, imaginative and intellectual skills.

To fulfil its aims, the course provides Performance and Research opportunities and a practical training in essential Physical and Acting Skills. The course is structured progressively to place students in control of their own resources as a performer and to empower them to assume progressively greater responsibility for their own work. Mountview regards ability to 'own' personal creativity and skills as the foundation for a career in theatre in the twenty-first century. Mountview wants graduates to be actors with the potential to be regularly employable in a tremendously varied industry and to possess the intellectual and creative energy to engage actively in the development of the medium in which they work.

The Musical Theatre Course provides the student with a range of acting and performance opportunities underpinned by practical training in essential physical and vocal skills. Students are offered many opportunities to explore develop and strengthen all the skills needed for a career in performance, not only within theatre but also in other media.

The course reflects the demands of the contemporary professional musical theatre for highly-skilled performers able to combine Acting, Singing and Movement in their presentation of a seamless journey of character. In the training, therefore, equal emphasis is given to the disciplines of Singing, Dance, Movement, Voice and Acting to enable the performer to flow from text into song and dance with no loss of character. Musical Theatre students also benefit from weekly one-to-one singing lessons.

The course is delivered in modular form. Course years are described as 'Levels' to indicate progression. Year One is Level One; Year Two, Level Two and Year Three is Level Three. The course is a developmental journey - from the point when an applicant revealed their personal potential at audition to the point when a student is able to demonstrate a securely-grounded, professional level of ability on completion.

Students who receive a Dance and Drama Award, funded by the Young People's Learning Agency, will follow and be awarded the Trinity College London National Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre in addition to the opportunity to complete the BA (Hons) Degree.
