Martin trained at Dartington College of Arts. His professional career as a Theatre practitioner spans over thirty years in a variety of theatre contexts as actor, choreographer/dancer, teacher and writer.
During the 1980s he worked in the companies of Mary Fulukerson, Vindhaxor (Sweden), Yolande Snaith and English Dance Theatre, whilst presenting solo theatre works and work through collaboration. He was a member of the Chisenhale New Dance Collective (1986-90), Choreographer in Residence (1993) and a director of Chisenhale Dance space (1994-96). He is co-founder and artistic director of dA dA dUMB Productions (founded 1989) and co-director of Industrial and Domestic Theatre Contractors (established 1982).
His work in Copenhagen has included Den Ny Drama Skole, Denmarks Design Skole, Nordiske Teater Skole and work for television and stage.
