Remembering Peter James CBE

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Peter James CBE and our thoughts are with his family. Peter carved an extraordinary career over many decades and will be remembered as a true legend of theatre and arts education. He was the co-founder of Liverpool Everyman, Artistic Director of Sheffield Crucible, Principal of LAMDA and Artistic Director of the Lyric Hammersmith. In 2011, he was honoured with a CBE for his contribution to the arts, a fitting recognition of a lifetime dedicated to the theatre. As a theatre director he worked with the best and created some exceptional work. His passion for new writing was evident throughout his journey and his belief in emerging artists was a thread throughout. Peter was Head of MA Theatre Directing at Mountview from 2012 until 2024 and his students thrived on his incredible breadth of experience. His influence will continue to reverberate through the countless lives he has touched.
