In the mid-1960s at 16 years of age, Twiggy became internationally known as the world’s first supermodel. Her photographic modelling success epitomized the age.
She appeared on numerous magazine covers around the world including Vogue, Elle and Tatler. She is now a writer, singer, actress, designer, presenter, producer and supports many charities.
Twiggy became a successful actress in film, stage and television, beginning her acting career by starring in Ken Russell’s film The Boyfriend, for which she won two Golden Globe awards: Most Promising Newcomer and Best Actress in a Musical.
In the US she was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway hit musical My One and Only. Twiggy was a guest judge on the top US reality series America’s Next Top Model opposite the show’s creator Tyra Banks. Twiggy has also recorded several albums, from pop to country, to 1930’s/40’s songbook.
She is an ardent supporter of animal welfare and is an anti-fur campaigner. She is also known for her support of breast cancer charities.
As a designer, Twiggy has created fashion ranges in the UK, the USA and Japan and was a brand ambassador for M&S women’s wear.
In 2023 a stage musical based on Twiggy’s life, written by Ben Elton, opened at The Menier Chocolate Factory Theatre in London, to huge acclaim. In March 2025 the documentary feature film Twiggy, directed by Sadie Frost, was released in the UK garnering 4- and 5-star reviews.
Twiggy is the recipient of many honours and awards and is a true British, and global Icon. In 2007 Twiggy was proud to be given an honorary doctorate from Mountview. She was awarded the Freemanship of the City of London in 2017. In 2019 Twiggy was honoured with a Damehood in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to fashion, the performing arts and charity.
