(SOLD OUT) Community Dance Programme (for children aged 6-12 + an accompanying adult)

In this 4-week community dance programme for beginners, young people aged 6-12 are invited to bring an accompanying adult for a fun challenge, a chance to learn new skills and some quality bonding time. Experienced choreographer and teacher Jazz Deer-Olafa will lead these intergenerational sessions.

Workshop series goals:

  • An introduction to multiple dance styles and techniques.
  • Build strength, flexibility, co-ordination and rhythm.
  • Develop confidence and performance skills.
  • Encourage self-expression and creativity.
  • Provide a space for fun and connection. 

Participants are asked to ensure their availability for all four sessions before registering for this opportunity.

Workshop 1 - Modern/Contemporary Dance

Saturday 28 February, 2pm – 3pm

The workshop leader will use her ‘Jazkinect’ methods to combine the expressive freedom of modern dance with different jazz styles for participants to try. Exploring turns, jumps and floor work, participants will get moving and have fun. Suitable for all ages and abilities.

Workshop 2 - Tap Dance

Saturday 7 March, 2pm – 3pm

With a focus on rhythm, timing and musicality, dancers will learn basic steps and footwork patterns. An accessible and fun workshop for people of all ages and abilities.

Workshop 3 - Acro Dance

Saturday 14 March, 2pm – 3pm

Acro dance blends dance techniques with acrobatic elements such as flexibility, control and body awareness. A relaxed session that encourages everyone to be present and have fun. Suitable for all ages and abilities.

Workshop 4 - JazKinect Fusion Dance

Saturday 21 March, 2pm – 3pm

Participants will blend their learnings from the programme together and celebrate their experiences from the three weeks prior as choreographer and teacher Jazz Deer-Olafa leads a final blended dance session for the group.

Dance Teacher and Assistant Choreographer

Having started dancing at the age of 6, Jazz went on to train in ballet, tap, modern, musical theatre, and acro dance. Jazz trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and holds a BA Honours Degree in Performance Arts. Jazz has worked as a professional dancer for many years in performances, tours and videos and with Ballet Soul as assistant choreographer.
