Lord Barber of Ainsdale had a long career in the trade union movement and in the public, private, voluntary and charity sectors.
He worked in the TUC from 1975 until 2012 serving the last ten years as the TUC General Secretary during which time he also served on the Court of Directors of the Bank of England. After retiring from the TUC he served for 6 years as Chair of the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS).
He has also served on the Boards of Transport for London, the Financial Services Culture Board, Openreach, Mountview and on the Council of the City St George’s University of London.
Brendan was knighted for services to employment relations in 2013 and became a Labour working peer in 2025.
