The Fundamentals of Storytelling (18+)

In this four-week workshop series for adults, participants will be guided through the foundational methods of generating, developing, and performing compelling narratives across various formats. Led by experienced facilitator and storyteller Amari Harris, these workshops will provide an opportunity for learning and connection in a fun and supportive environment.

Participants are asked to ensure their availability for all four sessions before registering for this opportunity.

This workshop series is open to participants aged 18+.

Workshop 1 - Personal & Fictional Narratives (Biographical)

Saturday 28 February, 2pm – 3:30pm

This session focuses on the art of drawing inspiration from life.

Participants will learn techniques for:

  • Accessing and structuring compelling stories from their own personal memories and experiences.
  • Developing rich, believable backstories and narrative arcs for fictional characters.

Workshop 2 - Improvisation & Creation (Devising)

Saturday 7 March, 2pm – 3:30pm

 A dynamic session dedicated to collaborative and spontaneous story generation.

Participants will explore:

  • Using a creative stimulus (e.g. an object, sound, or phrase) as a launchpad for new narratives.
  • Employing improvisation techniques as a powerful tool for instantaneous story development and character building.

Workshop 3 - Imaginative Play & Performance (Play)

Saturday 14 March, 2pm – 3:30pm

This fundamental focuses on hands-on, accessible storytelling, making it particularly valuable for those working with young children or seeking to embrace a playful approach.

The session will cover:

  • Transforming everyday props and simple costume into catalysts for imaginative, interactive stories.
  • Techniques for creating stories that encourage audience participation and spontaneous fun.

Workshop 4 - Structure & Form (Text)

Saturday 21 March, 2pm – 3:30pm

A deep dive into the construction of formal narratives.

Participants will master:

  • Understanding and applying classic story structures (e.g. three-act structure, hero’s journey) to both short-form and long-form writing.
  • Developing coherent plots, effective pacing, and strong textual voice in written stories.
