We naturally strive to extend kindness to those perceived as “different.” Yet an excessive emphasis on benevolence and pity can foster unintended discrimination. True understanding requires more than goodwill—it demands listening. The voices of those who are “different” deserve to be heard, not just our assumptions about them. After all, they always say “just treat me as a regular guy.”
