Peckham

Mountview Moves

Mountview is moving to a new home.

We are now embarking on an exciting project to change the shape of UK drama training. We are building a new school through which we will become the leading academy in excellence, social access and innovation in training for the creative industries.

In partnership with Southwark Council we have secured a high street site in the heart of Peckham in south London, next to the Stirling Prize-winning library. Since July 2015 we have been developing designs with Carl Turner Architects for our new home. We have also been talking to local cultural organisations and considering how we could enhance the current community offer to better benefit the local people of Peckham.

On 28 September 2016 Southwark’s Planning Committee voted unanimously to approve our planning application.

Ground stabilisation and foundation works were carried out this spring and building work began in April 2017. Mountview in Peckham will open to public and students alike in autumn 2018.

The Design

Carl Turner Architects have designed a building which includes a public foyer with café bar, 200-seat main auditorium, 80-seat studio theatre and rooftop restaurant/bar with views across the London skyline. Training facilities include 19 rehearsal studios, two further performance studios, music practice rooms, two TV studios and a radio suite. Further spaces include a retail unit and a 200 sq m rehearsal studio for commercial hire.

The Academy will be built on vacant land set back from Peckham Hill Street. The theatre block will be adjacent to the library and an adjoining teaching wing will stretch along Surrey Canal Path. It is being built by Gilbert-Ash who recently completed the Stirling Prize winning Liverpool Everyman Theatre.

Proposed building materials include a corten steel cladding the studio block and flinty grey brick around the theatre block (to complement the brightly coloured glass panels of the library next door.

Training facilities will be in use by the academy during the day and available to the public in the evenings, weekends and holidays. Local community groups will receive discounted room hire rates.

Public activities will include weekend and evening performance classes for young people and adults, apprenticeships and volunteering opportunities and high quality, affordable fitness and wellbeing classes. Local residents will receive discounted tickets for Mountview productions in the two theatres throughout the year.

Timeline, Feedback and Fundraising

In September 2016 Southwark Council granted planning permission for the building.

Building work began in April 2017 and Mountview plans to open in Autumn 2018.

The cost of the building project will be met through a finance package and fundraising from philanthropic sources.

We are keen to hear from you.
