A Restoration comedy with a twist, The Man of Mode is a ridiculous comedy of manners viewed through a contemporary lens. A messy, wild ride involving a host of rakish and roguish characters, and the anarchic entanglements between them.

This brand new production is created by the founders of EMERGE(ncy) PARTY, which was formed in 2020 with the aim of creating a world where young people shape the future through creativity.

Duration: 2 hours 25 minutes, including a 20-minute interval

The Man of Mode features pyrotechnics.

Barney McElholm

Director

Barney is a director who makes work with collaborative ensembles.

Alongside Bethany West he is developing Becoming a new show about young peoples power and their brains supported by Arts Council England and The Wellcome Trust.

Together they run EMERGE(ncy) PARTY a company that exists to help young people shape the future through creativity.

Barney has projects in development with Histrionic Productions and the Park Theatre.

As Assistant Director: And Then There Were None (Fiery Angel/Royal and Derngate, postponed 2023), Wild with dir. Eva Sampson (Unicorn), and both Henry VI and Richard III with Sean Holmes and Ilinca Radulian (Shakespeare’s Globe).

Bethany West

Director

Bethany is a theatre maker based in Margate, who trained on the MFA in Theatre Directing at Birkbeck College.

Together with Barney McElholm, Bethany is developing Becoming, a show about adolescent development and moments of transition, for their company EMERGE(ncy) PARTY.

As Assistant Director, Bethany has worked with Sean Holmes and Zoe Svendsen (Hamlet, Shakespeare’s Globe), Sean Holmes and Ilinca Radulian (Henry VI and Richard III, Shakespeare’s Globe), Orla O’Loughlin, Told by an Idiot and Emma Callandar.

As Producer and Assistant Producer, Bethany has worked with the Royal Court Theatre, Bristol Old Vic Ferment, MAYK, Mayfest and In Between Time Festival.

Bethany has an agony aunt radio show with Jude Shapiro on Margate Radio @Woe_800

Tina Torbey

Set and Costume Designer

Tina is an architect and theatre designer based in London.

She was granted the Dingemans Design award at the National Theatre, soon after graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Her design work includes: Dead Don’t Floss (NT), Trailer-Story (English Touring Theatre) and the staged musical Cabaret earning the Silver Award at the World Stage Design 2017.

Alongside her design work, Tina specialises in auditorium planning.

She has done independent consultancy work for a multi-purpose space in Miami and for a new art centre in Tripoli Lebanon.

Chuma Emembolu

Lighting Designer

Chuma trained with the Royal Shakespeare Company, under the tutelage of the Chief Electrician and Lighting Designer.

Highlights: L’enfant (Royal Academy of Music), Love, Genius and a Walk (Theatre Technis Theatre), Poison, Passion and Purification (Susie Sainsbury Theatre), Maggie and Ted (Garrick Theatre), Tales from Ovid (Swan Theatre), Don Juan (Hoxton Hall), Bouncers and Shakers (Gulbenkian Theatre/Marlow Theatre), Tainted the Musical (The Vaults).

She has had numerous Offie commended productions including Great Expectations, Macbeth the Musical, For Black Boys Who Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy, as well as Offie nominated productions like I and the Village, The Good Dad and many others.

Lighting design credits include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear, The Tempest, Popcorn, Antony and Cleopatra, Romeo and Juliet, Metamorphosis, Gift of the Gab and Tainted the Musical.

Russell Ditchfield

Sound Designer

Russell is a sound designer and composer from Lancashire. Credits include: Groan Ups (Vaudeville West End/UK tour), Going the Distance (Oxford Playhouse/Lawrence Batley/The Dukes Theatre), Merry Christmas Carol (Royal Court Liverpool), Home, I’m Darling (Bolton Octagon), Macbeth (Lawrence Batley Theatre), Parakeet (Edinburgh Festival), My Beautiful Black Dog (Bush Theatre), Fear and Misery of the Third Reich and Katzenmusik (Andew Lloyd Webber Theatre) and Carousel (The Mack).
