“And when king’s head and king’s crown are gone, what will be in their place? You?”
December 1648. In a country exhausted by Civil War, the army occupies London and moves against parliament in a military coup. Howard Brenton’s play explores the next 55 dangerous days as the victors in the Civil War are tasked with negotiating the future and begin to think the unthinkable. How to forge a country without a king?
