In 1887, Nan Astley sits in the audience; she doesn’t know it yet, but the next act on the bill will change her life. Tipping The Velvet is a coming-of-age love story exploring desire, sex, class and identity in the queer subcultures hidden beneath the soot and grime of Victorian London. 

 Tipping the Velvet is performed by our MA Performance – Acting cohort.

This production features strobe lighting, scenes of a sexual nature, violence, threat, loud noises/loud music, strong language, mentions and depictions of BDSM, depictions of sexual harassment, innuendo.

Kate Budgen

Director

Kate is the Joint Course Leader for MA Performance at Mountview.

She trained at Birkbeck College and on the National Theatre Studio Directors course.

Kate has been a Creative Associate at the Bush Theatre and has worked as Assistant and Associate Director for The Gate Theatre, The Almeida, The Opera Group, Pentabus Theatre, the Bush Theatre, Opera North and for the Michael Grandage Company.

She was Associate Director on Girl from the North Country from 2019-2022. Directing credits at Mountview include: Alice by Heart and Head Over Heels.

Christina Fulcher

Movement Director

Christina is a movement director and certified intimacy director/coordinator (Bectu IC Registry).

She holds an MFA in Movement Directing and Teaching from RCSSD. She is a senior lecturer at LAMDA and Leeds Conservatoire.

Her credits include work with the BBC, Royal Opera House, English Theatre Frankfurt, Park Theatre, Orange Tree Theatre, and the West End.

Mountview productions: Spring Awakening, The Watsons, Serious Money, and The Grain Store.

Alex Musgrave

Lighting Designer

Alex designs lighting for theatre and opera across the UK and Internationally.

Most notably Home at Chichester Festival Theatre, Figaro the Musical (London Palladium), The Forsyte Saga – Part 1 & 2 (Swan Theatre – RSC / Park Theatre) and The White Factory (Marylebone Theatre).

Alex has been nominated for two Offie Awards for Best Lighting Design.

Other venues include Soho Playhouse - New York, Wolly Mammoth Theatre - Washington DC, The Sailsbury Playhouse, The Lowry - Salford and the Birmingham Hippodrome.

Nicola T. Chang

Sound Designer

Nicola is a composer/sound designer for stage and screen.

She was a co-winner of the Evening Standard Future Theatre Fund (Audio Design) in 2021, and has received a WhatsOnStage nomination for Best Sound, Off West-End Award nominations in Sound Design and BroadwayWorldUK nominations in both Sound Design and Musical Direction.

Her works include the Olivier-nominated plays: For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy, The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs, The Swell and A Playlist for the Revolution.

Theatre includes: My Neighbour Totoro, The Tempest (RSC), Summerfolk, The Importance of Being Earnest (National Theatre), The Unbelievers, White Pearl (Royal Court).

As a performer: Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World, Six and Stomp (West End/world tour).
