Information on student accommodation, shared housing and council tax

HOUSING AND SHARED ACCOMMODATION

Mountview does not currently have a student accommodation partnership in Chelmsford.

COUNCIL TAX

Full-time students are exempt from paying council tax. In houses where all the occupants are full-time students, there is a full exemption from paying council tax. If there is a non-student living in a house alongside full-time students, the household council tax bill will be discounted by 25%.

It is the responsibility of the student to apply for a council tax exemption – find out more and apply here.

QUESTIONS AND ADVICE ABOUT ACCOMMODATION

Mountview will always aim to answer general queries but may not always have the answers or knowledge relating to the most up-to-date housing regulations. Citizens Advice may be a useful source of detailed information and support.

Tenancy Agreement: A legally binding document that states how long you will stay at the property and outlines the specific rules and regulations. Some contracts are singular (each individual living in the house has a separate contract) and others are joint (all housemates sign the same contract). Joint contracts mean that all occupants share responsibility for rent and bills.

Guarantor: An individual who guarantees the contract by taking responsibility for payment of the rent should you not be able to pay it.

Deposit: An amount of money usually equivalent to a month, or six weeks rent. It is held and returned when the contract has expired, provided that the property is deemed to be undamaged.
